UOCodex.com - September 12, 2006
September 12th, 2006 by SmithWe are still running in a sort of “stealth” mode - not actively advertising the site or anything, as it needs a lot of work still yet, but I thought for those few who have been invited and for those that are finding us through Yahoo and Google, that we’d fill you in on some of what we’ve done recently. If you’d like to discuss any of these, please use the UOCodex.com forums. It’d be great to hear what you’d like to see more of, how easy you can find the information we have already online, as well as where you’d like to see things go.
A lot of work has been done behind the scenes of UOCodex.com over the past five days or so. One of the biggest things is the UO dev team documentation project - a little project here at UOCodex.com to flesh out all of those Ultima Online developers you see mentioned in the credits.dat file tucked away in your Ultima Online directory, as well as to work on preserving information about cancelled Ultima-related projects (including one that surprised us, and it has nothing to do with UO2/Ultima Worlds Online: Origin, or Ultima X: Odyssey. We’ll talk about that one at a later date).
We are preserving and presenting information about the cancelled online Ultima projects (the two listed above) because nobody else is actively doing so - believe me, none of us think they will reveal anything about UO in its current state, but it’s still very fascinating to see what might have been (and technically, a lot of what was going into UO2 ended up in UO in a manner of speaking). We have a lot of information that has not yet been put online (including literally 150+ screenshots from Ultima X: Odyssey alone!), but we are getting to it as fast as possible.
We have three reasons for doing our UO dev team project:
- One, preservation of UO history.
- Two, it’s interesting to see the evolution of the development teams (including the current team).
- Three, it’s interesting to see how many UO “alumni” have moved on to head or help lay the groundwork for other MMORPGs.
Keep in mind that we are far from finished with individual members pages, however we have many available, and we do have complete information for the various expansion teams as well, and overall it’s really starting to take shape. You can view the information either by individual release teams, or a master listing. A few weeks down the road, we will bring together the information about non-UO projects that various “alumni” have worked on (as well as past projects that current developers have worked on) and present it in an easy to follow fashion.
Individual Teams:
>> Ultima Online (1997) Development Team
>> UO: The Second Age Development Team
>> UO: Renaissance Development Team
>> UO: Third Dawn Development Team Designer/World Builder, Add’ Art & Animation
>> UO: Lord Blackthorn’s Revenge Development Team
>> UO: Age of Shadows Development Team
>> UO: Samurai Empire Development Team
>> UO: Mondain’s Legacy Development Team
>> Ultima IX: Ascension Development Team
>> Ultima Worlds Online: Origin Development Team
>> Ultima X: Odyssey Development Team
>> Past UO Dev Team Members - List
>> Current UO Dev Team Members - List
One of the most interesting things, is verifying something we kind of suspected - that the current dev team has members going back to UO’s beginnings (including one who’s been working on UO since 1996, with a two-year break). They have become our current “Legends”:
Current Ultima Online Legends:
>> Jason “Stormwind” Spangler - Working on UO since 1996 (except for 1998 - 2000)
>> Tim “MrTact” Keating” - UO: Renaissance to Present
>> Bonnie “Mesanna” Davis - UO: Third Dawn to Present
>> Anne “Silvani” Pitkin - UO: Third Dawn to Present
One thing we’d like - information about the developers of Ultima X: Odyssey and Ultima Worlds Online: Origin, as well as other cancelled projects. We are piecing the information together, but if you have any, it’d be great to hear about it. Please Contact Us.
