Ultima IX: Ascension
Announced:
Shipped: October 31, 1999
Official Description:
Prepare to embark on an adventure beyond imagination with the return of the bestselling role-playing series of all time. In the ninth and final chapter in the 20-year legacy you return to Britannia for your last epic quest. As the heroic Avatar, only you can save Lord British and his people from the evil Guardian who has devastated the landscape and tainted the eight sacred virtues. Valiant combat, magical prowess, and knowledge of the eight virtues are your weapons against evil in Ultima 9: Ascension, the most epic role-playing game ever created for the PC.
Notes:
- Five year gap between Ultima VIII and Ultima IX.
- Not considered “Classic” UO.
- Originally supposed to be isometric before team members were pulled into Ultima Online
- Problematic release: Lots of bugs, pretty high-end graphics requirements (especially compared to UO)
- The Map/World is smaller than previous Ultimas (but much more complex)
- The Guardian was originally going to be closely related to the Shadowlords.

Comment about Ultima IX’s inclusion on UOCodex.com: We have included information about Ultima IX on UOCodex.com, because we have found that because of the overlap with Ultima Online (which came out two years earlier), there was a lot of “cross-pollination” so to speak - there are several instances of key developers/ORIGIN/EA staff that worked on Ultima IX as well as Ultima Online, its expansions, and even its cancelled sequels.
