Ultima Canon

Just what is considered “Ultima Canon”? What should and should not be discarded when looking through Ultima history for clues to what the next part of the current Inu scenario? There is a lot to sift through, however Richard Garriott, aka Lord British had some things to say about the first few:

“The first few Ultimas were all pretty generic when it comes to storyline and the world in which the games were set.” “In fact, if you look at those early games, most of the elements in them are pretty much stolen from whatever was popular at the time.” (GameSpy Interview, May, 2004)

This is a topic we will delve more into towards the end of 2006, using both a series of polls and forum discussions, as we head into 2007, the year of UO’s 10th Anniversary (11th or 12th if you consider the Pre-Alphas).

It’s easy to say that for most of us, Ultima IV - VII were the official, end-all, Ultima Canon (or Ultima Prime as Wilki or CatHat described it), however some view that as way too simplistic - either because of elements of Ultima III that could fit into the UO world, or because the UO world contains many references to Ultima I and Ultima II even though many dismiss those (even Richard Garriott dismisses them).

There are also those that want to talk about Ultima VIII and especially Ultima IX as well (since Ultima IX, in theory, was going to have an online sequel).

If you’d like to take a gander at what “Ultima” is in “Ultima Online”, please visit Floria’s Ultima Info Page:

I am an Ultima nerd. I love the Ultima games and I love playing Ultima Online. However I was always curious how the lore presented in the Ultima games affected Ultima Online. Over the years I collected various information of how Ultima and Ultima Online are related.

Now I finally found the time to put this information online and make it accessible to everyone curious how both games relate to each other, and as source for some background knowledge for those UO players that never found the time to play the Ultima games.

This Site tries to present a shard independent overview of the lore of Ultima in the context of Ultima Online. Additionally each shard has local lore and events which may override information found on this site. Due to the number of shards and events, there is no way to incorporate shard specific information in this site. Also I wanted that this site is useful to everyone, regardless of shard.
