Hosting
We have bandwidth and server space coming out the wazoo right now (not literally - there are limits of course). The person among us who handles the hosting/back-end work has their own dedicated server. It’s used for other projects that do pay the bills for the server. As such, they have found that they have a lot of space and bandwidth that goes unused every month, and that led, in part, to the founding of UOCodex.com
Goals?
We want to preserve as much as we can, the existing community that has sprung up and perhaps withered over the past decade. The same holds true for Ultima-related sites. Once we finish with the revamp of UltimaCodex.com, if you have an Ultima-oriented site, the offer still stands true.
If you have a UO-oriented site that you have let fall through the cracks, or are hosting on one of the freebie servers that blast users with pop-ups and ads, we would be glad to help you move to either your own domain hosted on our server, or as an extension/sub-domain of UOCodex.com.
How?
Contact Us. If you are the owner of a site, and you can no longer host it, or want it moved away from one of the freebie sites that inundate visitors with ads/etc., we can probably move it to a sub-domain here, or to it’s own domain.
How much will it cost - your own domain name?
If you want your own domain name, you will have to register it, normally around $8-10 per year, through an actual registrar. Once you have a domain name, the rest of it’s free - we simply setup an account (with very reasonable limits for both space and bandwidth, both of which can be raised if needed) for your domain name, and you have full access to your domain name/account (and your account only). It’s possible we would do the registration for free, it heavily depends on the site.
Can I just donate my pages, information, screenshots, etc., and let you all handle it?
Of course. If you have proven you are the owner of a site, and you are no longer interested in maintaining it, we can do one of the following:
- Make it a sub-domain of UOCodex.com, keeping everything in its original context.
- Integrating the information into UOCodex.com, making it a searchable part of UOCodex.com
- Keeping its existing domain name, and we simply take over the fees, hosting, etc.
- No matter what, you will be given full credit, and we will try to maintain the original context (i.e. the look/design) as much as possible.
Limitations - your own domain - advertising
If we provide you bandwidth and space, and you do everything else, we ask that you not advertise unless it is say Ultima Online through Amazon. Anything else, and we ask that you host elsewhere. To be blunt, we are out to preserve history, not to provide a free platform for you to make money. We have also found that in many cases, especially for dial-up users, a lot of advertising slows down the connection on their end, leading to a frustrating experience. Blogger.com is free and easy for you to use if you intend to do that.
Limitations - your own domain - useage
If the software you use for your site is too resource intensive (for the amount of traffic), we will either help you correct whatever is the problem, help you move to another software platform, or find you another host. There should be no problems though.
