>> About UOCodex.com

Some of the questions a few people have emailed, as well as friends have asked (we’ve cleaned up some of them, or paraphrased them, but you should get the general meaning):

> Are you affiliated with EA? Nope. We’ve known memers of past dev teams who lived in Austin, we’ve attended player events, both in Austin and elsewhere, and two of us were about to be fully involved as Counselors/Volunteers just as that program in North America was shut down, but that’s it.

> Where do you get your information? You might be surprised. A lot of it is from UO.com (we are now masters of UO.com’s search functions :eng101: ). If it comes from another non-EA UO-oriented site, we do cite the source when possible. Unfortunately we do have information that was received in e-mail, of which we do not have the originating source. If you come across anything on our site that is not documented properly, and you know of the proper source, please Contact Us! It would be very much appreciated. Our primary sources (in order of use):
1) UO.com (85%+ of our data comes from here).
2) Official UO material - UO Hint guides, UO Manuals, UO Packaging, EA Marketing Materials (5-10% of our data)
3) Credits.dat file located in the UO install directory. This pretty much covers 95% of our developer information.
4) Archive.Org - Wayback Machine - for pages/sites that no longer exist.
5) Personal knowledge - things we’ve experienced in the game or heard first-hand.
6) Communications with EA members (news letters, player gatherings, emails, public postings by EA Officials on forums, etc.).
7) MobyGames.com - A Top 10 coolest site for gaming geeks like us. You must visit. We insist! MobyGames has helped us clarify a few things here and there, enough to make it worth our while to link to them and donate some money.

> Will you host my site? As we said, we are dedicated to preserving UO history. See the UOCodex.com hosting page for details.

> Are you well known in the UO community? Yes and no. Under various handles/aliases on forums such as (the former) Boards.UO.com and UO.Stratics.com as well as others, some of which aren’t around any longer, we’ve posted a lot (not so much in the past year or so). Some have read our seperate websites. Overall we are fairly anonymous. One of us is infamous for getting into a online shouting match on Boards.UO.com with Gordon “Tyrant” Walton over the issue of Lake Superior’s lag and frequent crashes back in 1999/2000 before the UO: Renaissance launch. Unfortunately most of those posts were lost, but they were very interesting, if a bit heated and both parties probably went over the line, and surprisingly they weren’t locked (did they have a moderator or two that played LS that was perhaps on their side, or perhaps it was Tyrant’s decision not to lock things and continue the “dialogue” as it were).

> Where do you fit in with other sites?
See our About page for the full answer to that, but suffice to say, we cover an area that really no other site covers currently (although in the past, other sites did cover it, at least partially). There maybe overlap, but a big part of the reason for this site’s existence is to cover material that we were interested in, but couldn’t find.

> What about forums?
At the request of a few people, we have installed discussion forums. Our forums are going to be fairly generic and are suited for discussions pertaining to this site, or UO history - people are welcome to post about whatever UO-related topic they might want to, and I’m sure there will be responses, but in some cases, they maybe better off posting in the forums found at Stratics, UOForums.com, etc.

> Can I “borrow” your information/data for another project/site?
If it’s a personal commentary/critique we wrote, please reference us. If it’s information we’ve listed from another site - please credit at least the originating site we used. If it’s generic information - as we said above, a huge portion (easily 90%) of the data presented here, is derived from UO.com, or materials made available by Electronic Arts Inc./ORIGIN, or in communications received from EA/ORIGIN, through email, newsletters, or postings by EA employees on forums, and you are only bound by EA’s Terms of Service (TOS). In the case of postings by EA employees on other forums/sites - you should credit those sites, even though it’s official communications from EA employees to players (it’s a weird area, we know).
