First, a Disclaimer
Ultima Online, ORIGIN, and the Ultima Online and ORIGIN logos are trademarks of Electronic Arts Inc. Game content and materials copyright 2006 Electronic Arts Inc. All rights reserved. We are not affiliated with EA.
Second, Another Disclaimer
The first went so well, let’s do another one. We are not a playguide (yet). We are not competing with UO.com, UO.Stratics.com, etc. At this time, you are not going to find tables on the damage that such-and-such bow can do or how to complete such-and-such a quest - Stratics, The InuWiki, UOStuff, etc., already do that. What you will find is timely news, history, and information about UO, both in-game events and out-of-game events, whether it’s EA’s acquiring Mythic or the return of EMs or whatever. Does that mean we won’t add that information in the future? No, simply that it’s not at the top of our list right now. If somebody wants to put together one or more guides about any aspect of UO, please contact us and we’ll gladly add it.
Our Stance/View
Some of those sites previously mentioned, they look at UO with a microscope. We look at it standing 50 feet away, pondering why something happened, what is happening, and what is going to happen. We also provide commentary and analysis, which most other sites don’t do these days (We miss Lum the Mad, etc.,). You will find, over time, that we are quite unlike any other UO-oriented site on the web.
It’s important to understand that we do not intend to replace any other site currently existing and that is currently active.
About Us
One person, aka Smith, does about 90% of the work here (hosting, site design, administration, information collection, formatting, etc.), with the other two (Chuckles and Sherri the Mouse) contributing information, news, etc., as well as other players. Smith, Chuckles, Sherri the Mouse (or Sherry depending on which game/booklet/etc. you look at) should be familiar names to Ultima players. If not, proceed immediately to Floria’s Ultima Info Characters’ Page.
Our Other Sites and How UOCodex.com Came to be.
We’ve had other sites/blogs at various times (including recently) and we have pulled a lot of information from our other websites into this one. Even though UOCodex.com is new, the content is not. Rather than try and revamp our previous sites, which were hosted through larger providers (blogger, *cough* geocities *cough*, etc.) we are doing our own thing, with our own domain names.
About the Site
Initially, it was all going to be under UltimaCodex.com - Both offline Ultima and Ultima Online information. Then we looked at how we were laying things out, what was required to be an official “fan site” on UO.com, etc., and it came down to having to split the two - keeping UltimaCodex as a seperate site concentrating on the offline games. Technically we wouldn’t qualify for certain things on UO.com if we kept one massive site, as a UO “fansite” is required to have a substantial portion devoted to UO-only information. That’s turned out to be okay though. It may very well in our best interests to keep the two seperate.
Some of Our Goals with UOCodex.com in Regards to UO History
Chronicle the history of UO, and present it in an easy-to-follow manner for people new to UO. This includes dev team members, publishes, shard histories, Ultima lore, etc. There are tons of sites with UO information. None really chronicle the history, at least currently.
Some of Our Goals in Regards to Present Day UO
To put the news into perspective. All too often we see people ask “why was this done”, and we hope to say “hey, this was done because a year ago this changed, and two years before that, this changed”.
Contributions/Submissions
We would love to have any and all submissions you’d care to submit - we shall use whatever alias you prefer, and will not reveal your email to the Dread Spam Lords (or anybody else for that matter). If you are interested in writing commentaries, columns, what have you, and can’t find an outlet elsewhere, contact us.
UO History on the Web :eng101:
We are dedicated to preserving UO history on the web. If you have a UO-oriented site that you have let fall through the cracks, or are hosting on one of the freebie servers that blast users with pop-ups and ads, we would be glad to help you move to either your own domain hosted on our server, or as an extension/sub-domain of UOCodex.com. Please see the UOCodex.com hosting page for details.
Money/Advertising
How much you got? Just kidding. We would gladly advertise other Ultima-related sites (you can even create a banner that we’ll rotate) for free, as long as they are of the informational variety, and not of the “WE SELL YOU MILLIONS OF UO GOLD AND UO GAMECODES”. We will occasionally advertise very specific Ultima/Ultima Online items (i.e. the box editions through Amazon, etc.) to help defray a little bit of our costs, but that’s it.
If I (Smith) were to do a site to make money, I would pick something quite different to invest my time in. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t love to quit my daytime job and work full time on an Ultima/Ultima Online related site, however that’s not going to happen anytime soon. To make any money at this, I would have to run third-party advertising that I don’t agree with.
